A teenager fell more than 18 meters off a cliff while a friend was taking a photograph of him, and miraculously escaped with only minor injuries.

The incident happened on the cliffs of Old Harry Rocks, in Dorset, England, last Thursday.

Ian Brown, an officer at Swanage Coastguard Station, said that the boy was taking a photograph on the edge of the cliff during a school trip.

"The students had been instructed not to go near the edge of the cliff," he told Somerset Live.

When rescue teams arrived on the scene, they found the boy almost unharmed, being helped by a local activities company.

Swanage Coastguard said that the emergency teams "were surprised by the absence of serious injuries".

"It is remarkable that, despite falling more than 18 meters, he suffered only minor injuries," they said.

An opinion shared by the Purbeck police, who confirmed that "miraculously", the boy "only suffered very minor injuries".

The boy was assessed and eventually rejoined his classmates, "with some strong safety advice about his actions".
