The parents of a seven-year-old girl who died after being buried by sand on a beach in Florida, USA, have launched a national campaign to help prevent similar tragedies from happening in the future.

Sloan Mattingly was helping her nine-year-old brother Maddox dig a hole in the sand when it collapsed.

Bathers who were there rushed to remove the brothers from the sand, but Sloan died after being taken to the hospital.

The girl was buried in the 1.8 meter deep hole for around 20 minutes. Her brother was also taken to the hospital, but survived.

The tragedy happened on February 20th and the family now wants to alert other families to the possibility of the tragedy happening again.

Sloan's mother, Therese, and her father, Jason, have now launched a social media campaign that encourages families to build sand castles when they are at the beach, rather than digging potentially dangerous holes.

The "Sand Castles for Sloan" campaign provides beachgoers with tips and advice to help prevent adults or children from becoming buried in sand, warning that "sand holes can quickly collapse."

Beachgoers are also advised to cover holes after they are "done playing" to help keep others safe.
