Zelensky will address world leaders at the Shangri-La Dialogue, an annual defense forum taking place in the Southeast Asian city-state, the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) told French agency AFP.

The name of the Ukrainian leader was not included in the participant program initially provided by the organization.

Zelensky will speak at the forum's seventh plenary session, titled "Re-imagining solutions for global peace and regional stability", on Sunday morning.

"Zelensky's presence at the Shangri-La Dialogue comes at an important moment," said the director general of the IISS, Bastian Giegerich, in a statement cited by the Spanish agency EFE.

"We look forward to his remarks," added the person responsible for organizing Asia's main defense forum.

Participants at this year's forum include United States Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who spoke on Saturday, and Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun, who will also participate on Sunday.

The President of Ukraine participated in the 2022 edition of the Shangri-La Dialogue, but via video conference.

In recent days, Zelensky has visited several European countries, including Portugal and Spain, to ask for more military aid for the Ukrainian army, which is losing ground in the face of relentless Russian attacks.

On Friday, in Sweden, he held talks with the heads of State and Government of Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland, as part of the third Ukraine-Northern Europe summit.

Zelensky's intervention at the Singapore forum will take place at a time when Ukraine has been facing a new Russian offensive for almost a month, after the failure of a counteroffensive it launched last summer.

It will also coincide with a change in policy by several of Ukraine's allies, including the United States and Germany, who have given in to Kiev's insistent requests to use Western weapons against military targets on Russian territory.

The war in Ukraine was started by Russia, which invaded the neighboring country on February 24, 2022 to "demilitarize and denazify" it, as announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin at the time.

The number of civilian and military casualties is unknown, but several sources, including UN agencies, have admitted that it will be very high.
