At least 20 people died in a bus accident in the Andes mountain region of Peru on Tuesday.

The information was provided by local authorities to RPP radio, cited in turn by the Reuters agency.

Jhonny Rolando Valderrama, head of the country's national road protection division, told RPP that the accident occurred on the Los Libertadores road, in the Ayacucho region, located in the south-central Andes.

Reuters is keen to highlight that deadly bus accidents are common on Peru's mountainous roads. In April, for example, at least 25 people died when a bus fell into a river in the Cajamarca region, in the north of the country.

In September last year, in the Anco region, a similar accident resulted in the deaths of at least 24 people.
