The campaign of President of the United States, Democrat Joe Biden, accused Republicans led by former President Donald Trump of falsely trying to moderate his speech and soften his positions on issues such as abortion.
"It's absolutely a political strategy" that shows that "the Republican Party understands that they are on the wrong side" on issues like abortion "and are trying to moderate, but the American people have seen where they really stand and their true position on these issues." , defended Quentin Fulks, deputy director of the presidential campaign, at a press conference.
Fulks responded in this way to a question about the approval, on Monday, at the Republican National Convention taking place this week in Milwaukee, of the platform that summarizes Trump's policies, in which the position on abortion is slightly softened from that defended by the most radical Republicans.
After the assassination attempt on Trump, the Republican and some party figures are moderating the tone of their speeches and Trump himself - who presented himself at the convention on Monday without his usual aggressiveness - confessed that he is rewriting the speech he will give Thursday, when he accepts the nomination.
Fulks highlighted that, on the contrary, after the attack the Democratic Party has not changed its dialectic and will continue to focus on "talking about issues like reproductive freedom, workers' rights, social security, Medicare, the economy... .".
"The president and vice president (Kamala Harris) have been very clear in their vision when it comes to the agenda they intend to present to Americans. Our campaign has been talking about this for months and we will continue to do so (... ) having a frank conversation about the strong contrast" between the two parties, he stressed.
Despite the incident against the Republicans, there is no doubt that "there are two very different visions of this country", as demonstrated by Trump's nomination of J.D. Vance as vice-presidential candidate, much criticized by Democrats.
"But deep down, Americans are worried about their mortgages. They're worried about their rent. They're worried about their health care (...) and we're going to continue to draw the contrast of what that really means for these people's lives American, Biden's agenda, compared to Trump's project for 2025", he guaranteed.
For Democrats, this project is a government program prepared by ultra-conservative groups in case the Republican returns to the White House, and from which Trump has tried to distance himself by saying that some of his proposals are ridiculous.
Trump was injured on Saturday during a campaign event in Pennsylvania when a man fired shots toward the stage where the former president was giving a speech. One of the bullets hit the former president's right ear, causing a minor injury.
The governor of the state of Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro, announced that a former firefighter identified as Corey Comperatore, 50, died while protecting his family from shots fired by Thomas Crooks, 20, who was killed by authorities.
