Eleven people died today following a landslide caused by flash floods in Hunan province, central China, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

The natural disaster ‘caused a one-storey hostel to collapse’, CCTV said.

‘It was confirmed that 18 people were buried,’ added the broadcaster, noting that of these, six survived with injuries.

According to official media, the landslide was caused by a flash flood in a mountainous area.

More than 240 rescue teams were sent to the scene, CCTV also reported.

This year, China is experiencing a summer of extreme weather conditions. Floods in the north and south-west of the country killed at least 20 people at the beginning of July. In May, the collapse of a motorway in southern China after several days of rain killed 48 people.
