‘Six people have died so far. Rescue teams are continuing their search and rescue work,’ official television said of the fire in Zigong, a city in Sichuan province, 1,600 kilometres from the capital Beijing.

The shopping centre is located in a 14-storey building and the flames were affecting the ground floor and the 4th, 5th and 6th floors, reported CCTV, quoted by the French news agency AFP.

The fire broke out for unknown reasons in the early evening (local time) and Chinese television images showed thick black smoke coming from the building on a shopping street.
