Israel Wants Immediate Expulsion of Türkiye from NATO

Faced with Erdogan's "threats" and "dangerous rhetoric", Katz "instructed diplomats at the Foreign Ministry to urgently engage in dialogue with all NATO members, calling for the condemnation of Turkey and demanding its expulsion from the regional alliance", according to a statement released on Monday night.

On Sunday, Erdogan hinted that he could invade Israel to end the Palestinian conflict if he had more weapons at his disposal.

"We have to be very strong, because then Israel could not make the mess it makes in Palestine (...) Just as we entered Karabakh, just as we entered Libya, we will do the same with them. There is nothing to stop it. We just have to be strong and then we can take these steps? We will take them," he said.

Katz said Turkey had violated the fundamental principles of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization "by threatening to invade a democratic Western country without provocation.

Erdogan is following in the footsteps of Saddam Hussein [former president of Iraq] and threatening to attack Israel. He should remember what happened there and how it ended," Katz warned, noting that Turkey is home to the "headquarters" of the Islamist group Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip and has been at war with Israel since October.

"Turkey has become a member of the Iranian axis of evil, along with Hamas, Hezbollah [Libyan Shiite militia] and the Houthis in Yemen," he argued.

A NATO member since 1952, Turkey does not consider Hamas a terrorist organization and for years has welcomed some of its political leaders into exile.

Turkey, a historic ally of Israel and one of its main trading partners in the Middle East, broke off diplomatic relations in October following the Gaza conflict and in April imposed restrictions on exports to Israel.

The unprecedented attack by Hamas on October 7 left around 1,200 people dead and more than 250 hostages, according to Israeli authorities.

In response, Israel launched an offensive in Gaza that has already killed more than 39,000 people, according to the local health ministry, which is controlled by the Islamists.
