A Portuguese citizen died this Thursday, the victim of Russian bombing in Dnipro, Ukraine, where he was fighting after having voluntarily decided to join the French Military Foreign Legion for the Territorial Defense of Ukraine.
According to the Humanitarian Association of Voluntary Firefighters of Macedo de Cavaleiros, João Luís Chaves Natário was part of the corporation between 2003 and 2007.
"Following the escalation of the conflict triggered by the Russian invasion of Ukraine two years ago, he voluntarily joined the French Military Foreign Legion for the Territorial Defense of Ukraine", reads a note published on social media.
The corporation also indicated that "throughout his life, whether as a firefighter or as a soldier, João always defended people, dedicating himself to protecting the most precious asset of all: human life."
In the note, the firefighters addressed "the most sincere and heartfelt condolences at this time of deep pain and sadness" to the soldier's family and friends.
According to Jornal de Notícias, the Portuguese was 38 years old and died during a Russian attack on Dnipro.
