Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's campaign announced Tuesday that it maintains its defense of gun ownership, after the attempted assassination of the former president during a rally.
The position was reaffirmed by Chris LaCivita, one of Trump's main advisors, during a meeting with the pro-gun organization USCCA, during the Republican convention held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The advisor assured that Trump "is a great defender" of the Second Amendment of the Constitution, which enshrines the right to possess weapons, and accused the current president, Democrat Joe Biden, of wanting to eradicate it.
"For us, it is important to allow citizens to have weapons and carry them to protect themselves and their families," said LaCivita, who added that he himself often carries a gun when he is not traveling with Trump, whom he calls "The Boss." .
For Republicans, he assured, it is important to send the message that they want to "make the US safe again", after four years of Joe Biden's government, which, in his opinion, caused "chaos".
Trump was the victim of an assassination attempt on Saturday during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a 20-year-old man shot him with an AR-15 rifle.
Biden has insistently asked Congress to ban these weapons.
The AR-15 is involved in the deadliest shootings in the US, including school massacres.
