The US Federal Bureau of Investigation [FBI] is on alert for possible attacks on the Democratic Convention (19-22 August in Chicago) in retaliation for the assassination attempt on Donald Trump.

The information is contained in an intelligence report obtained by CNN, which released it today.

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security [DHS] "remain concerned about the possibility of violence following or in retaliation for the assassination attempt on 13 July 2024," according to the document.

The security forces have so far not identified any preparations for an attack, but they are alert because "there are people in some virtual units who have threatened, encouraged or made some kind of reference to acts of violence in response to the assassination attempt".

The document warns that "political division has provoked violence in the past" and that some radicals "see political and social tensions as an opportunity to use and promote violence for ideological purposes".

Thomas Matthew Crooks, a young man in his 20s, shot former President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on 13 July at an outdoor rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, wounding him in the ear.

The investigation did not determine the motive of the shooter, who was shot dead by members of the secret service.

Both Republicans and Democrats have criticised the security errors, which forced the resignation of the director of secret services, Kimberly Cheatle.

The Democratic Convention is expected to bring together 50,000 people in Chicago, including prominent politicians such as the President, Joe Biden, as well as the Vice President and Democratic presidential candidate, Kamala Harris.
