Greek firefighters remain mobilized today, on the fourth day of fighting a forest fire that has spread to the outskirts of Athens, despite improvements, reports AFP.
The fire is no longer as intense as it has been in recent days, but there are still some outbreaks that could lead to the fire starting again. Around 530 firefighters remain mobilized on the ground with 145 vehicles and we have received help from our European colleagues,’ explained a fire brigade spokesman.
Almost 300 firefighters, along with other helicopters, fire engines and tankers, were sent to Greece from six countries (France, Italy, Czech Republic, Romania, Serbia, Turkey), following Greece's activation of the European Union's Civil Protection Mechanism.
Fueled by violent winds, Greece's worst forest fire of the year spread across dry territory on Sunday and devastated 10,000 hectares, destroying numerous buildings and vehicles.
The fire has already claimed one life, caused significant damage and displaced thousands of people.
