The President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, today exonerated the Minister of Economy and Finance, Max Tonela, a position that will be taken over by the Prime Minister, Adriano Maleiane.

In a statement, the Presidency of the Republic said that the head of state, "in the use of the powers conferred on him" by the Constitution of the Republic, "exonerated Ernesto Max Elias Tonela from the post of Minister of Economy and Finance".

No reasons were given for Max Tonela's departure from the post he had held since 2022, which comes two months before the general elections on 9 October.

"In a separate presidential order, the Head of State appointed Adriano Afonso Maleiane to the post of Minister of Economy and Finance, in addition to his duties as Prime Minister," the statement added.

Adriano Maleiane had already been Minister of Economy and Finance in Filipe Nyusi's first government, from 2015 until 2022, in his second term, when the portfolio was taken over by Max Tonela.
