On the social network X, the governor of Georgia, Brian P. Kemp, stated that he has directed “all available state resources to respond to the incident at Apalachee High School” and assured that he will continue to “work with local, state and federal partners”.
“I urge all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those who attend our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state,” he said.
US President Joe Biden is also being briefed on developments, the White House said.
Numerous emergency vehicles and a large police force have been sent to the scene, about 70 kilometers northeast of Atlanta. Local, state and federal police are at the school.
“My teacher opened the (classroom) door to see what was happening. Another teacher ran in and told her to close the door because there was a man with a gun,” reported 17-year-old student Sergio Caldera, quoted by ABC.
With the door closed, he and his classmates fled to the back of the classroom, where they heard screams outside.
