Moldova's former Chief of General Staff Igor Gorgan was charged with high treason today by the Prosecutor's Office Against Organized Crime and Special Cases, after having been accused on several occasions of alleged espionage for Russia.

"He has been granted the status of a defendant while the criminal investigation continues. This person benefits from the principle of presumption of innocence until there is a firm judicial resolution in accordance with the law," said the spokesman for the Prosecutor's Office, Emil Gaitur, in statements to the local TV channel TV8.

The spokesman said that prosecutors are trying to find out the suspect's involvement and what information he may have shared with "foreign powers". In addition, they are seeking to analyze the impact of the alleged crimes on the country's interests and security.

Several Moldovan media outlets reported that Igor Gorgan had provided Moscow with information about the visit of several senior Ukrainian defense officials to the country, where they had allegedly requested more weapons and ammunition as part of the Russian invasion that began in February 2022.

After being detained last June, Gorgan was removed from his post and had all his military decorations stripped from him.

The situation led the Moldovan government to also request the resignation of the current head of the Armed Forces, Eduard Ohladciuc. In a letter sent to the country's President, Maia Sandu, the executive cited supposedly contractual reasons.
