The US president stressed that “what should have been a joyous back-to-school season” at Apalachee High School “has now turned into another horrific reminder of how gun violence continues to destroy communities”.

US President Joe Biden reacted on Wednesday to the shooting that killed at least four people at a high school in Winder, Georgia, which he described as “senseless gun violence”.

“Jill and I mourn the deaths of those whose lives have been cut short by more senseless gun violence and the thoughts of all the survivors whose lives have been forever changed,” reads a statement released by the White House.

In the note, the US president stressed that “what should have been a joyous back-to-school season” at Apalachee High School “has now turned into another horrific reminder of how gun violence continues to destroy communities”.

“Students across the country are learning to hide instead of reading and writing. We cannot continue to accept this as normal,” he said.

Biden said he was in “close coordination with authorities at the federal, state and local levels” and thanked the “first responders who took the suspect into custody and prevented further loss of life”.

“Ending this epidemic of gun violence is personal to me,” he added, stressing that, ‘after decades of inaction, Republicans in Congress must finally say ’enough is enough' and work with Democrats to pass common-sense gun safety legislation.”

It should be noted that at least four people died and several dozen were injured following a shooting at Apalachee High School on Wednesday. The suspect has already been arrested.
