Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev today called on the European Union (EU) to adopt a neutral position in his country's conflict with Armenia, instead of following France's stance, which he described as "destructive".

"The EU should adopt a neutral position on the path to peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, as it has always done", Aliyev said at the end of a ceremony in Brussels, Belgium, as quoted by the Azertac news agency.

The Azerbaijani president added that the EU bloc "has nothing to do" with the conflict, but is currently "actively dealing with the issue".

He considered this position to be "counterproductive" and will only generate "mistrust", distancing the European Union from "a process of normalization", the head of state of that country added.

He also criticized Paris for its stance, which he considered to be a "destructive policy".
