The Israeli army announced today that it had attacked some 230 "terrorist targets" in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon over the past day, attacks that killed at least 15 people overnight, according to Palestinian medical authorities.

The Israeli troops hit "terrorist cells, anti-tank missile posts and surface-to-surface missile launchers," an Israeli army statement said.

"Israeli troops eliminated dozens of terrorists in hand-to-hand combat and in attacks by the armed forces and located large quantities of weapons," it added.

Israel bombed a predominantly Christian area southeast of the city of Tripoli in northern Lebanon on Monday, leaving at least 21 dead, the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health reported.

Lebanon's National News Agency (ANN) reported that this was Israel's first bomb attack on the city of Aitou, in the Zgharta district, and added that the attack targeted a residential apartment, while local media reported that the property had recently been rented.

Israel's massive bombing campaign, which began in late September, has left more than 2,200 people dead and forced more than 1.2 million people to flee their homes to escape the violence, according to figures provided by the Lebanese government.

Meanwhile, in the Strip, Israeli forces continue to focus their attacks on the Jabalia area, in the north of the enclave, where they claim to have "eliminated dozens of terrorists" in the past day.

Residents in the area report that families are trapped in homes and shelters.
