The vice chairman of China's top military body, Zhang Youxia, told Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov on Monday that bilateral relations had reached "the highest level in history" and that Beijing wanted to "continue working" with Moscow.

The Russian minister is in China for the second day of his official visit, with the war in Ukraine one of the main topics on the agenda.

The visit comes a week before Chinese President Xi Jinping travels to Russia to attend the BRICS summit.

Zhang, vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, stressed that the development of the relationship had taken place under the "strategic leadership" of Xi and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.

Relations "continue to evolve in a healthy and stable manner", the official said, according to a statement from the Chinese Defence Ministry.

The general expressed China's readiness to continue working with Russia, regarding the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries as a "new starting point" to continuously consolidate and develop "long-term good-neighborly friendship", as well as "high strategic trust" and "mutually beneficial cooperation".

During the meeting, Zhang stressed the importance of implementing the consensus reached by the two leaders through high-level exchanges and deepening military relations, to "defend the sovereignty, security and development interests of both countries".

Beloused the "historic friendship" between Russia and China, and expressed readiness to strengthen cooperation and seize opportunities to expand the strategic partnership in various fields.

The two leaders agreed on the need to continue strengthening the strategic partnership, focusing on defense, security and regional stability.

Last September, Beijing and Moscow held a series of joint naval exercises in the Sea of Japan, which analysts say reflect the close military cooperation between the two countries, which has reached new heights in recent years.

The exercises join a series of strategic initiatives that underscore the deepening defense relationship between the two nations, at a time when tensions with the West continue to rise.

The visit comes amid Western accusations that China is supporting Russia's military campaign in Ukraine with weapons, which Beijing has repeatedly denied.

Belousov's trip to Beijing comes days after a meeting between Putin and Iranian President Masud Pezeshkian, in which the two leaders sharply criticized Israel and reaffirmed their strategic partnership at a time of tensions in the Middle East.

The two countries also strengthened cooperation in sensitive areas, such as military-technical matters, at a time when relations with the West continue to deteriorate.
