The driver of a passenger train in New Jersey, United States, has died after the train collided with a tree trunk on the tracks.

The incident happened at around 6:00 a.m. (11:00 a.m. in mainland Portugal) on Monday near Roebling station in Mansfield Township, according to the Associated Press news agency.

There were 42 passengers on board, 23 of whom had to be treated for minor injuries.

An investigation is underway to determine what caused the tree trunk to 'land' on the tracks, causing the accident.

Traffic on the River Line was suspended in both directions between Roebling and Trenton stations, as well as sections of some adjacent roads, while authorities worked at the scene.
