The Football Association (FA) has reportedly made Thomas Tuchel the new (and leading) candidate to take over as coach of England’s top team, following Gareth Southgate’s resignation in July and the consequent interim ‘promotion’ of Lee Carsley.
According to information provided early on Tuesday afternoon by English television station Sky Sports, the FA’s board has already opened talks with the German, who, it should be remembered, has been free since last summer, when he left the helm of Bayern Munich.
The FA even considered names such as Jurgen Klopp (who has since been unveiled as Red Bull’s new director of soccer), Graham Potter (who remains free of contract), Eddie Howe (of Newcastle) and even Pep Guardiola (of Manchester City).
However, the German’s experience at the highest level, as well as the fact that he’s available immediately and doesn’t have to pay any kind of compensation, meant that he ended up in pole position.
