US President-elect Donald Trump has announced that he has invited Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik to be the next US ambassador to the United Nations.

"I am honored to nominate (...) Elise Stefanik to serve in my administration as the United States Ambassador to the United Nations. Elise is an incredibly strong, tenacious and intelligent fighter for America," Trump said in a statement to the New York Post on Sunday night.

Stefanik confirmed to the same newspaper that she had accepted the invitation.

"In my conversation with President Trump, I expressed how deeply honored I was to accept his nomination and my eagerness to secure the support of my colleagues in the United States Senate," she added.

Stefanik's eventual nomination will need to be confirmed by the Senate, the upper house of the US parliament.

Stefanik is currently the leader of the Republican representatives in the lower house of Congress, the House of Representatives.

Trump was elected the 47th President of the United States, having surpassed the 270 votes required in the electoral college, while the results are still being counted.

The Republican Party also regained the Senate by surpassing the threshold of 51 elected representatives, while in the House of Representatives the latest data indicate that it is also ahead in the count, with 210 seats, just eight short of a majority.

Hours earlier, Trump announced that he would nominate Tom Homan, the former head of immigration during the Republican's first term in the White House, as "border czar".

Homan was acting director of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency between January 2017 and June 2018.

Homan's appointment does not require Senate confirmation.

Homan is the second name announced for Donald Trump's future administration, after Susie Wiles, the architect of the Republican's victorious campaign.

Trump stressed on Thursday that the 60-year-old will be the first woman to serve as the president's chief of staff.
