The newly elected president of the United States advised his Russian counterpart not to escalate the war in Ukraine, The Washington Post reported today, referring to a telephone conversation between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.

According to today's edition of the newspaper, Trump reminded the Russian leader of the considerable military presence that the United States has in Europe and expressed his interest in holding talks to address "the resolution of the war in Ukraine soon".

During the election campaign, the Republican candidate promised that he would reach an agreement to end the Ukrainian war in just 24 hours, but without ever detailing how he would do it.

Analysts have suggested that part of Ukrainian territory would be ceded to Russia, something unacceptable to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Also according to The Washington Post, the Ukrainian government was informed of the phone call between Trump and Putin and did not oppose the conversation.

However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov considered Trump's statement that he would end the conflict in Ukraine "in 24 hours" to be an "exaggeration".

Since winning Tuesday's election, the Republican has held about 70 phone calls with world leaders, including one with Zelensky, which also included tycoon Elon Musk.

On Thursday, Putin publicly congratulated Trump on his election victory over Kamala Harris and called him "courageous" for his response to an assassination attempt at an election rally in July.

Outgoing US President Joe Biden plans to speed up arms shipments to Ukraine so he can deliver the remaining $6 billion in aid approved by Congress before the end of his term.

Trump, who will take office on January 20, has been highly critical of the arms shipments to Ukraine.
