Xanana Gusmão Hopes to Deepen Bilateral Relationship With Donald Trump

The Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, Xanana Gusmão, congratulated Donald Trump on his victory in the US elections, with whom he hopes to work to deepen collaboration in “areas of common interest” and the bilateral relationship.

In a letter sent to Donald Trump and released to the press today, the Timorese chief executive said he hopes that under Donald Trump's presidency, "ties" between the two countries will be strengthened, "promoting greater collaboration in areas of mutual interest".


"The Government of Timor-Leste looks forward to working closely [with Donald Trump] and his administration to advance our common goals and further deepen our bilateral relationship", said the Timorese prime minister.


Xanana Gusmão also stressed that the United States and Timor-Leste have "a strong relationship of friendship and cooperation based on mutual respect, shared values ​​and an unwavering commitment to democratic principles".


According to the chief executive, this partnership and connection has "significantly contributed to the development of Timor-Leste and its international involvement".


Donald Trump was elected the 47th President of the United States, having surpassed the 270 votes required in the electoral college, while the results are still being counted.


The Republican Party also recovered the Senate (upper house of Congress) by surpassing the threshold of 51 elected representatives, while in the House of Representatives (lower house) the latest data indicate that it is also ahead in the count, with 210 seats, just eight away from the majority.
