Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky assured today that Donald Trump has listened to Kiev's position and predicted that the war will end sooner under the new Republican administration than it would under Joe Biden.

"Of course, with the policies of the team that will now lead the White House, the war will end sooner. That is their position and their promise to public opinion, and it is very important for them," Zelensky stressed in an interview on Ukrainian public television, Suspline.

The Ukrainian head of state also insisted that for Ukraine "it is very important to have a fair peace", so that justice can be done after losing its "best people" in the war.

Zelensky added that in his interactions with Trump, the US president-elect has "listened to the fundamentals" of what Ukraine is asking for.

"I haven't heard anything against our position," he added, regarding Trump's reaction.

The Ukrainian President has repeatedly spoken in public about the need to end the war as quickly as possible, but calls for peace to take place on conditions acceptable to Kiev, which currently refuses to cede territories, and stresses the need to receive guarantees of credible security.

Trump has promised that he will promote negotiations to end the war as quickly as possible.

Ukraine fears that the peace proposed by the republican will be imposed on it in exchange for giving up territories occupied by Russia.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, with the argument of protecting pro-Russian separatist minorities in the east and "denazifying" the neighboring country, independent since 1991 - after the collapse of the Soviet Union - and which has been moving away from Moscow's sphere of influence and approaching Europe and the West.

The war in Ukraine has already claimed tens of thousands of lives on both sides, and recent months have been marked by large-scale airstrikes by Russia against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, while Kiev's forces have targeted targets on nearby Russian territory. border and on the Crimean peninsula, illegally annexed in 2014.

In the third year of the war, the Ukrainian Armed Forces were faced with a lack of soldiers and weapons and ammunition, despite repeated promises of help from Western allies, which began to materialize in the meantime.

Russian troops, more numerous and better equipped, continue their advance on the eastern front, despite the Ukrainian offensive in Russia, in the Kursk region.

Negotiations between the two parties have been completely blocked since spring 2022, with Moscow continuing to demand that Ukraine accept the annexation of a part of its territory.
