Six people have died in the last few hours off the Canary Islands, when they were on board the four precarious boats that arrived at the island of El Hierro with a total of 284 occupants, in the last few hours.

The ferries had set sail four days ago from Mauritania, Spain's emergency services said.

The first of these four vessels with migrants arrived in La Restinga, the Spanish archipelago of the Canary Islands, assisted by the ship Adhara at 9:18 pm on Tuesday with 67 people on board: 46 men, nine women and 12 minors from Mali, Egypt, Senegal and Guinea -Bissau.

The second ferry arrived at 11:10 pm on Tuesday, after being rescued by the Adhara when it was 15 kilometers from El Hierro.

It had also left the capital of Mauritania four days ago and was carrying 74 people on board from Mali, Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire: 69 men, three women and two children.

The third precarious vessel arrived at the westernmost island of the Canary archipelago at 00:15, with 81 men from Mali, Senegal, Bangladesh and Gambia, five of whom were dead, who had also departed from Nouakchott.

Upon arriving at the port, 12 immigrants were transported to the island's hospital and another 12 received medical care at the disembarkation site.

The fourth precarious vessel was attended to while sailing 93 kilometers off El Hierro by the ship Polimnia, with one of the 62 occupants (from Mali, Gambia, Mauritania and Senegal) arriving dead.
