The FBI announced Thursday that it would close its diversity and inclusion division in December 2024, amid a nationwide rethink of such policies.

"In recent weeks, the FBI has taken steps to close the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) effective December 2024," the agency said in a statement.

The announcement came four days before Republican President-elect Donald Trump takes office.

FBI Director Christopher Wray is a Republican appointed by Trump during his first term.

Wray, however, is expected to resign in the coming days because Trump has named a close ally, Kash Patel, as his replacement.

The FBI's decision to close the division comes as companies and institutions in the United States are moving away from their diversity initiatives.

Walmart, Ford, Meta, Harley-Davidson and McDonald's are just a few of the companies that have taken such steps.

McDonald's, one of the latest to do so, cited a "changing legal environment" as the reason.

The Supreme Court set a precedent in 2023 by banning positive discrimination based on race in college admissions, following lawsuits filed by conservative groups.

The justices ruled that Harvard University and the University of North Carolina violated the Constitution by using race as a factor in their admissions processes.
