A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas was underway in the Gaza Strip Sunday, beginning an initial six-week period of calm and raising hopes for an end to the 15-month war. Hostages Romi Gonen, Emily Damari and Doron Steinbrecher arrived at a hospital in Tel Aviv in "stable condition," according to officials. In a statement, President Biden said four more women will be released in seven days.

The truce, which started at 11:15 a.m. local time, is the first step toward ultimately ending the conflict and returning nearly 100 hostages abducted in Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 attack.
