A truck loaded with food and other goods was looted on Sunday by suspected terrorists in the district of Muidumbe, in the Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, sources from the community told Lusa today.

"It was in Múngue, I think it's the last village in Muidumbe," a local source told Lusa from Mocímboa da Praia.

The attack is attributed locally to a group that operates in the region and took place in broad daylight, along National Road 380, on the Macomia-Awasse stretch, a corridor that leads to the northernmost districts of the province, one of the few paved roads in the region.

"It happened over the weekend, it was only known on Monday," he added, without going into further details.

There are no reports of fatalities between the parties, but the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces were called to intervene to restore normal movement of people and goods on the road.

"There is no talk of deaths, but of theft of goods, that's what it is. They took goods and fled," explained another source from Muidumbe.

Since October 2017, the gas-rich province of Cabo Delgado has been facing an armed rebellion with attacks claimed by movements associated with the extremist group Islamic State.

The last major attack took place on 10 and 11 May, in the district headquarters of Macomia, with around a hundred insurgents looting the town, causing several deaths and heavy fighting with the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces and Rwandan military, which is supporting Mozambique in the fight against the rebels.
