American billionaire Elon Musk, who had promised to reduce federal government spending by $2 trillion under Donald Trump's administration, has estimated that saving half of that amount would already be a "super result".

Appointed by Donald Trump to head a commission on "government efficiency", the world's richest man aimed to reduce the federal government's budget by $2 trillion.

"Let's try for two trillion. That would be the best possible outcome (...). And I think if we try to reduce it by two trillion, we have a good chance of getting to a thousand," Elon Musk stressed on Wednesday night, in a conversation with the head of the marketing company Stagwell, Mark Penn, broadcast live on his social network, X.

"And if we can reduce the budget deficit to between two and one trillion, while freeing up the economy to have additional growth, while the production of goods and services increases at the same rate as the money supply, there will be no inflation. I think all of this would be a great outcome," he added.

The owner of Tesla and SpaceX also explained that he has already identified several expense items to be cut, without detailing them.

"It's like being in a room full of targets. You can close your eyes and be sure that you won't miss the target," he described.

In the past, he had considered "massive staff reductions in the federal bureaucracy", while promising "decent" exit conditions.
