China's Ticket Office Breaks Records During Lunar New Year

Box office revenue in China hit a new record during the recently concluded Lunar New Year vacation period, topping 1.3 billion dollars (over 1.2 billion euros).



According to figures released today by the country's Film Administration, from the start of the vacation period on January 28 until Tuesday, the country's cinemas grossed around 9.51 billion yuan (1.257 billion euros), a new record for the Chinese New Year.


The number of moviegoers also reached a record 187 million.


In addition, every day between January 29 - New Year's Day - and February 3 brought in more than 1 billion yuan (132 million euros), according to the economic news portal Yicai.


The big box office hit in the Asian giant was “Ne Zha 2”, the much-anticipated sequel to the animated hit “Ne Zha” (2019), which has earned around 4.839 billion yuan (640 million euros) since its release on the same day as the Lunar New Year.


The podium is completed by the comedy “Detective Chinatown 1900”, with almost two billion yuan (264 million euros), and the war fantasy title “Creation of the Gods II: Demon Force”, with over 900 million yuan (119 million euros) by Monday.


The Lunar New Year is traditionally a peak season for the Chinese film industry. This year, the authorities have extended the vacation period to eight days, ending on Tuesday, February 4.
