Defending the Truth: Justice for Azagaia and Human Rights Defenders

In Mozambique, the character and integrity of human rights defenders are under relentless assault—not only through harsh rhetoric but also via brutal physical violence, resulting in countless assassinations. During electoral periods, malicious narratives circulate with the sole purpose of undermining the personality and reputation of those who champion truth and justice. These attacks are designed to erode the credibility and dignity of activists, artists, and all who stand up for human rights.

A striking example of this is the distorted portrayal of Azagaia—a renowned intervention musician and rapper, born Edson da Luz—in the eighth-grade Portuguese textbook currently in use. Rather than celebrating his legacy as a hero and an inspiration to the youth fighting for democracy, justice, and human rights, the text paints him as a criminal and a villain. While the heroes of the national liberation struggle may no longer resonate with today’s youth, figures like Azagaia have become beacons of hope and symbols of resistance.

This malicious narrative is not a mere oversight; it is a deliberate act, orchestrated by the Frelimo regime, to indoctrinate children with a depreciatory view of human rights defenders. Instead of promoting values such as justice, dignity, and solidarity, this material seeks to tarnish the image of those who dedicate themselves to defending the truth.

The grim reality is that human rights defenders—and all those fighting for justice—face these attacks on a daily basis. Such a situation must be forcefully condemned and subjected to legal scrutiny to restore dignity and reclaim the legacy of a musician whose memory continues to be assailed even in death. This tragic reality demands an urgent and effective response to preserve the identity and honor of those who have fought—and continue to fight—for justice and human rights in our country.

Bhayethe Azagaia!
