Warrants of arrest have been issued for Joachim Chivayo and Brian Gungwa, two men who failed to appear in court after being released on bail in connection with an alleged illegal gold possession case.
According to details provided, Chivayo, a 33-year-old Zimbabwean national, and Gungwa, a 20-year-old South African, were arrested in Brakpan in late November 2024. The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Unit apprehended the pair for allegedly possessing six unwrought gold bars valued at approximately R15 million.
On 28 November 2024, the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court granted each accused R20,000 bail. Their release came with strict conditions, including that they remain within the Gauteng province and South Africa, and report weekly to the Brakpan Police Station every Sunday, starting from 1 December 2024. The case was subsequently postponed to 25 February 2025 to allow for further investigation.
However, both men failed to adhere to their bail conditions and did not return to court. As a result, on 11 March 2025, the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court issued warrants for their arrest. Authorities now officially list Chivayo and Gungwa as wanted suspects, with law enforcement actively seeking their apprehension.
Anyone who sees or has information about Chivayo or Gungwa is urged to contact the South African Police Service (SAPS) immediately.
