"Donald Trump is threatening our democracy. First, he questioned our electoral system. Then, he questioned our judicial system. And now you can stop him," wrote Biden on the X platform, appealing for donations through a ' website' in which the Republican tycoon is classified as "an existential threat to the future" not only of democracy, but of the nation itself.

Biden's message followed a statement made today by Trump in New York, in which he launched new attacks on the judge and one of the key witnesses in his criminal trial in New York and reiterated that he will appeal the guilty verdict handed down by a jury.

In the same defiant tone he has adopted since the trial began, Trump argued that the verdict was illegitimate and politically motivated, seeking to downplay the allegations underlying the case.

Former President Donald Trump (2017-2021) was found guilty on Thursday of having falsified documents to cover up payments intended to cover up a sex scandal in the 2016 presidential campaign.

Trump, who is expected to be the Republican candidate in November against Democrat and current President Joe Biden, denied all accusations.

It is the first time that a former President of the United States has been found guilty of a criminal offense.

The sentence will be handed down on July 11 by a Manhattan court judge, four days before the Republican Party convention that is expected to present Trump as a candidate against Biden.

Both Biden and Trump used Thursday's verdict to launch appeals for donations to their election campaigns.

The Republican has been successful in his appeals, as donations to his campaign totaled 34.8 million dollars (32 million euros) just hours after the announcement of the guilty verdict, breaking all records, according to a statement released today by his own team.

These donations were almost double the largest recorded so far on the WinRed platform, and came mainly from so-called micro donations or contributions of a few dollars.

Donors' interest was such in the immediate moments after a New York jury's decision on Thursday that the platform "went down" for some time, according to several media outlets, with the former president's campaign explaining that " the system was overloaded" due to the large number of supports.

Of the donations registered on Thursday, almost 30% come from donors who have never contributed to the campaign.
