According to Jornal de Notícias, the Portuguese Program to Support Voluntary Return received more than five thousand applications. The majority, 85%, are from Brazilian citizens.

The lack of affordable housing, employment and the delay in regularization in Portugal are factors that have led immigrants to decide to leave the country.

In the last eight years, the voluntary return program has helped around two thousand immigrants return to their country of origin.
