Astrophotographer Mark Johnston, who has the status of Solar System Ambassador, has captured what may be the best photographs of the Sun ever taken from Earth.
Johnston took the photographs you can see above from the state of Arizona in the USA and, naturally, used specific and sophisticated equipment to capture very detailed images of the Sun - which is in one of its phases with a high level of activity.
It's worth remembering that NASA's Solar System Ambassadors programme uses volunteers from the public to communicate the latest scientific advances resulting from space exploration. As the US space agency's official website says, the programme currently has more than 1,100 volunteers.
