A 39-year-old man of Polish nationality was charged on Wednesday with assaulting Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen last June.

The information was released by the suspect's defense lawyer, Henrik Karl Nielsen, in a statement sent to the Associated Press (AP), in which he said that his client would not plead guilty as he had no recollection of the episode.

The assault took place in a square in central Copenhagen and two witnesses told the Danish daily BT that they saw Mette Frederiksen arrive and a man coming from the opposite direction push her hard on the shoulder, causing her to stagger but not fall.

Mette Frederiksen was observed and underwent tests at a Copenhagen hospital, having suffered "a slight cervical sprain", her office said.

According to the Danish press, he may have been under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident.

On charges of assaulting a public official, the man could face a fine or a prison sentence of up to eight years.

The trial of the case has been scheduled for August 6 and 7 in Copenhagen.
