The inspector general of the US Department of Homeland Security today announced an investigation into the Secret Service's role in the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania.

In the information, published on the inspector general's website, the agency states that the purpose of the investigation is to ‘Evaluate the United States Secret Service in its procedures for ensuring the safety of former President Trump at a campaign rally on 13 July 2024’.

The start of the investigation has not been announced, and this information was included among a long list of cases being investigated by the inspector general's office.

The 78-year-old candidate was shot in the ear during a shooting attack he suffered at a pre-campaign rally for the US presidential election in November, which took place last Saturday in the state of Pennsylvania.

Two people died in the attack, including the gunman, identified by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, who opened fire from a rooftop near the rally site.

Two other people were injured in the attack.
