The arrests were made in several simultaneous operations coordinated by the information and counter-terrorism department of the general security directorate in 45 provinces, the minister said in a statement published on the social network X.

"In the operations carried out against the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) in 45 provinces, 216 suspects were arrested," Yerlikaya said, without revealing the nationality of those arrested.

The Turkish minister added that investigations into the suspects had already begun "with accusations of having held positions of responsibility within the organization in the past and of having provided financial support."

Since its first attack in Turkey on March 20, 2014, IS has carried out a total of 21 attacks in the country, in which 309 Turkish citizens have been killed, including 15 members of the security forces, and more than 1,000 people have been injured.

The jihadist group also frequently attacks members of the Turkish army operating in Iraq and Syria.

In August 2016, Turkish armed forces launched an operation from Yarabulus in northern Syria to combat members of the Islamic State.
