A photo of a squirrel stuck in a tree is the big winner of the 2024 Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards. The contest winners were announced on Tuesday night and include, among others, a fish chasing a bird, a dancing insect and birds in love.
"Milko Marchetti was announced as the Overall Winner of this year's edition of the contest for his excellent capture of a red squirrel stuck in a tree, entitled 'Stuck Squirrel'", says a statement sent to Notícias ao Minuto.
The Nikon Comedy Wildlife Awards received nearly 9,000 entries from 98 countries that were narrowed down to 40 finalists, but choosing the winners "was fiercely competitive, with just a few points difference between the top five entries."
Quoted in the note, Milko Marchetti said that he has taken "many photos of squirrels, in many situations over the years in Italy", but this one seemed "really funny".
"Whenever I show this image at the nature seminars at my local photography club, the audience always erupts with raucous laughter, so I had to present it!"
In addition to the Overall Winner, the competition awarded other categories - Insects, Reptiles, Birds, Fish and other aquatic species, Nikon Junior, Nikon Young Photographer and public winner - and there was also space for nine honorable mentions.
