Canadian security forces have increased protective measures for the country's main political figures following Saturday's attack on former US president Donald Trump, Canadian Public Security Minister Dominic Leblanc announced today.

The Canadian minister expressed confidence that the Canadian Mounted Police "will do whatever is necessary to protect" the country's politicians.

Dominic Leblanc also highlighted that the country's Mounted Police and intelligence services, known by the acronym CSIS, provided him with confidential information about the attack against Trump that occurred when the Republican was holding a rally in Pennsylvania (USA).

LeBlanc also spoke on Sunday with his American counterpart, the Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, to offer help from Canada, reported the Efe agency.

Immediately after the attack, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau declared himself outraged by the attack and added that "political violence is never acceptable".

On Sunday, Trudeau spoke personally with Trump to convey his solidarity and repeat the message against political violence.

Trump, 78, suffered minor injuries to his ear during a shooting attack during a pre-campaign rally for the US presidential election in November, which took place in the state of Pennsylvania.

Two people died in the attack, including the shooter, identified by the US Federal Police (FBI) as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, who opened fire from a rooftop near the rally site.

Two other people were injured in the attack.
