A new contingent of 200 police officers from Kenya were sent to Haiti as part of the international mission to restore security due to the increase in violence by organized crime groups.

"The 200 police officers left last night [Monday], and should land in Haiti this morning," a senior Kenyan police officer told France Presse.

The first contingent of 400 Kenyan police arrived in Haiti at the end of June as part of the international mission.

Kenya proposed sending a total of 1,000 police officers to Haiti as part of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMAS), which should last until next October.

Forces and resources from Bangladesh, Benin, Chad, Bahamas and Barbados also participate in the mission.

Haiti is seriously affected by violence by armed groups that control 80% of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and the country's main communication routes.

Violence resurfaced at the beginning of the year, prompting the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry.

The international resettlement deployment was approved by a UN Security Council resolution in October 2023.
